Victorian Diamond Pendants & Rose Cut Diamonds
Victorian diamond pendants are renowned for their intricate designs and the romantic symbolism often embedded within them. During the Victorian era (1837-1901), jewellery became a significant expression of personal sentiment, with pieces often carrying deep meanings associated with love, friendship, and mourning.
Victorian pendants typically feature elaborate motifs, including floral patterns, bows, and intricate scrollwork. The use of curves and asymmetry adds to their charm. Many pendants incorporated symbols like hearts, infinity signs, or knots to represent enduring love and commitment. This symbolism was a hallmark of the Romantic Movement, which influenced the era.
Pendants often included moving parts, such as articulated pendulums or swinging elements, adding dynamism to their appearance. Victorian jewellery frequently combined different materials and gemstones, creating layered looks. Coloured gemstones, like rubies and sapphires, were often set alongside diamonds for contrast and vibrancy.
Rose cut diamonds became popular in the 16th century and were widely used throughout the Victorian era. Their flat backs and faceted tops allowed for a unique play of light, giving them a soft, romantic glow.
Unlike modern brilliant cuts, rose cuts have a dome shape with triangular facets, which enhances their ability to reflect light in a subtle, almost ethereal way. This made them particularly appealing for creating delicate and feminine pieces. Favoured for their ability to complement various settings and styles, they were a versatile choice for pendants. They could be used in clusters or as central stones, often surrounded by smaller diamonds or coloured stones. Victorian diamond pendants, especially those featuring rose cut diamonds, reflect the era's romanticism and craftsmanship, making them timeless treasures in the world of jewellery.
