Birks of Canada

Founded in Montreal by Henry Birks in 1879, Birks quickly grew from a small St. James Street shop into a nationally recognised house of jewellery. By the 1880s the company had relocated to larger premises and established a prominent flagship on Square Phillips. Early innovations, including the publication of the first Birks catalogue in 1894, helped build the brand’s reputation for fine craftsmanship, trusted service and elegant design.

Through the early 20th century Birks expanded across Canada, solidifying its place as a leading jeweller by combining artisanal skill with progressive retailing. In 1934 Birks was granted a Royal Warrant to supply British royalty, a distinction that affirmed its international standing and led to further prestigious commissions. By the 1930s the firm was celebrated for its quality work and enjoyed both national prominence and international recognition, earning numerous industry honours and serving a discerning clientele that included civic and cultural leaders. Today Birks’ heritage from 1879–1930s remains a benchmark of Canadian luxury and craftsmanship.

In the 1920s, Birks’ iconic blue box emerged and in the years that followed, hundreds of thousands of Canadians unwrapped their special blue boxes every year to mark special occasions.

The future queen, then Princess Elizabeth, was gifted a gem-laden platinum Birks necklace and famously said: “I have never received a more beautiful gift”.
