  • A feminine, soft flowing Art Nouveau pearl pendant and brooch. Made in 15ct yellow gold and inspired by nature, the pendant doubles as a brooch. With the use of curved lines and floral motifs, this is a great example of the Art Nouveau style - an artistic protest of the industrial age. The pendant features 52 natural half pearls ranging in size from 1.00 to 3.30 mm and is dated circa 1905.

  • Art Nouveau (1880 - 1910):
Beginning in France in the late 1800s, this was more of a movement than an era. It was an artistic protest against the industrial age which spread throughout Europe and the United States. The Art Nouveau Period saw a return to nature with intricately detailed pieces of jewellery being made in gold and silver with a wide range of coloured gemstones. The female form was made to look ethereal and enamelling techniques became very popular, being used in ways that had never been seen before.

    Edwardian & Belle Époque Period (1901 - 1910):
Named after the reigning King Edward VII and with notable influences from French Rococo décor, this period was the shortest in antique jewellery history. However, it was during this time that platinum was introduced into the art of jewellery making which changed the way diamonds could be set. The popular jewellery design at the time was the “garland” which flowed on from the Art Nouveau period as it focused on nature but more particularly, on flowers and leaves often arranged in some circular shape. Through the use of milgrain and pierced and engraved metals, the Belle Époque designs gave way to jewellery that mimicked the delicate nature of lace and ribbon with natural pearls and old mine cut diamonds being the material of choice.
